Mike was raised in South Central Los Angeles in the mid 1970's when the cultural shift of more Chicano's moving in began. Even though he had been in juvenile facilities before while in High School Mike found himself in a serious situation that led him to serve a 30-year prison sentence.
He spent most of his incarcerated time playing soccer and keeping out of trouble. He started his journey at Old Folsom in 1986, then to New Folsom in 87 then San Luis Obispo in 1990. Later in 1993 he spent the remainder of his sentence in Soledad.
While in Prison he spent a lot of time learning how to paint and draw. He created a large body of work consisting of tumbler cups, handkerchief art and envelope art and occasionally getting a couple of canvases done. Most of his work was mailed home and is now made available. He was finally released in 2013 and now resides in Mexico where he has recreated his new life.
